United States toughens its immigration stance

Deportations increase as anti-immigrant sentiment arises.

The increasing number of Central American deportees from the United States is occurring amid an intensifying anti-immigration sentiment in that country.

Guatemala offers a clear example of this trend. According to figures provided by the country’s General Bureau of Migration, the number of Guatemalans deported from the United States in the first three months of 2005 increased 18 percent (from 1,652 to 1,941) from the same period in 2004. The total number of Central American deportees in 2004 reached 7,729 people.
