Urging state Supreme Court to grant law license to illegal immigrant
The Associated Press
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Eight members of Congress and four former American Bar Association presidents are urging the state Supreme Court to grant a law license to an illegal immigrant.
Seven U.S. representatives and Puerto Rico's non-voting resident commissioner sent a letter to the justices on Monday supporting Jose Godinez-Samperio's application for a law license.
They expressed support for a "friend of the court" brief supporting Godinez-Samperio submitted by three ex-ABA presidents.
The fourth, former Florida State University President Talbot "Sandy" D'Alemberte, is representing him. D'Alemberte was one of his law school teachers.
Godinez-Samperio came to the United States when he was 9 years old and has passed the bar exam after graduating from Florida State.
The Florida Board of Bar Examiners has asked the justices if illegal immigrants can be licensed as lawyers.
