Federal prosecutors will seek a 6 ½-year prison term at a sentencing hearing Friday, Jan. 31, 2014 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, for Amara who they say exploited immigrant workers for labor, money and sex. V
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — A federal judge has sentenced a former manager at a kosher slaughterhouse in Iowa to 41 months in prison for harboring and exploiting workers who were in the U.S. illegally.
U.S. District Judge Linda Reade said the 41-month sentence for former Agriprocessors Inc. poultry managerHosam Amara was at the top of the recommended range under sentencing guidelines.
Reade rejected a request from federal prosecutors to give a longer sentence for Amara's role in sexually exploiting female workers. She said the government presented evidence of highly inappropriate workplace behavior but nothing that merits a longer term.
Amara will also get credit for more than 11 months he has spent in custody since his arrest.
Reade said Amara knowingly employed immigrants who were ineligible and profited by selling them used cars.
