Cannon Fights For Political Life

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) U.S. Rep. Chris Cannon is being forced into a primary following Saturday's state Republican convention.

He'll face Jason Chaffetz after neither candidate secured the 60 percent of delegate votes needed to win the party's nomination for the 3rd Congressional Distirct.

Chaffetz is the former chief of staff for popular Republican Gov. Jon Huntsman. After three rounds of balloting, he received about 59 percent of delegate votes. Cannon finished with about 41 percent.

The state primary is June 24.

Cannon is seeking a seventh term in office and has come under criticism for being too soft on illegal immigration and staying in office too long. His district is one of the most conservative in the country.

Chaffetz wants eliminate automatic citizenship for children born to illegal immigrants in the United States. He also wants to prevent states from issuing driver licenses to illegal immigrants.
