Rep. Stephen Sandstrom is making changes to his controversial illegal immigration bill that he says will make it less costly for local police agencies to enforce.

The Orem Republican said he is revising HB70 to give law enforcers more discretion in how they would detain and verify the legal status of people. He said the changes will maintain the original intent of his proposed law.

Sandstrom plans to make the new bill public at a Thursday news conference.

The proposal was scheduled for legislative hearing Wednesday afternoon, but he pulled it from the House Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice Committee agenda. He said the revised bill would ready for a Friday hearing.

“I think he’s doing exactly what’s he’s done from when he started this bill. He’s listening,â€

He's going to face heavy opposition from all MAJOR religious groups in Utah that back illegal immigration or talk about (reform). He's facing 3 serious issues, in my opinion:

    1. Missionary work and membership numbers in Mexico. By going against illegal immigration, churches are afraid it could burn bridges not only with the Mexican government (they can start denying visas to missionaries) but also pose safety issues for missionaries in that country if their churches are deemed as "racists" for preaching obedience to the laws of the land. Illegals do not want to hear about the laws of the land, only about what they need: amnesty and continued privileges.

    2. Many large corporations do business in Mexico and they too do not want Mexico to be upset with them.

    3. By constructing an "immigration reform" lie and platform, illegals and their advocates brainwash people to think that there is something wrong with immigration itself and not with the fact that ILLEGAL immigration is the real problem.

Sandstrom is a courageous man fighting a battle that's seemingly bigger than his honorable intentions. Fortunately, I think most Utahns support
legal immigration otherwise a huge hypocrisy would be in place, i.e., churches preaching obedience to the laws of the land and yet looking the other way - or getting in the way - when it comes to practical legislative solutions to illegal immigration.

Ex-missionaries who served in Mexico, many of whom now are successful businessmen may also frown on the idea of massive deportation of the "people" they learned to love and serve. In the meantime, Utahns continue to pay for the education and costs associated with illegal immigration. Once the pants are down, it's hard to pull them back up when it comes to law enforcement and the expulsion of illegals from the U.S. They will continue to focus on hard-core criminals and visa violators while allowing the workers to keep on doing what they've been doing for years: stay, get educated, work and enjoy the privileges and benefits that are reserved for LEGAL immigrants and citizens.
So, instead of blaming the law-breakers, they blame the system and say that immigration is broken and needs reform. In reality, the only reform needed is enforcement. They would have enforcement money if they weren't paying so much to sustain a growing illegal population and its associated costs not to mention that illegals continue to push their culture and language in towns and cities, above and beyond any other ethnic group.

Utah has created a vicious cycle that will end up just like in Arizona. Just give it 5-10 years and everyone will be up in arms about illegal immigration in the state while religious leaders convince themselves that God is bringing illegals to blossom in the Beehive state at the expense of everyone else.
