JAMES CITY -- James City County police have charged three illegal immigrants in the beating of a local man at the Stratford at Williamsburg apartment complex early Friday morning.

Enrique De Los Santos Hernandez, 29, of Williamsburg, is charged with maiming. Jesus Silva Banuelos, 38, of Williamsburg, is charged with attempted maiming. Carlos Miguel Martinez, Domingues, 22, of Durham, N.C., is charged with misdemeanor assault and battery.

Police spokesman Mike Spearman said the man was driving around the complex looking for a parking spot around 2:15 a.m. Friday when three men began banging on his car.

The victim got out of the car, Spearman said, only to have one of the attackers attempt to stab him with a knife and another hit him over the head with a shovel. Spearman said the victim was knocked to the ground, but able to get away. He later called police.

Spearman said James City County police referred the three to immigration officials.
