Probe Of Prince William County's Immigration Policy Sought

MANASSAS, Va. (AP) -- A Latino civil-rights group wants the Justice Department to investigate whether a tough stance on illegal immigration in Prince William County is resulting in police harassment and other abuses.

Activist Nancy Lyall says Latinos in Prince William County are being stopped and questioned for no reason. The county passed an ordinance in 2007 giving police discretion to ask about the immigration status of people they encounter when the officer reasonably suspects that person might be an illegal immigrant.

The county softened its policy in 2008 but it still draws comparisons to what was enacted recently in Arizona.

Prince William Police Chief Charlie Deane says the county has not seen an increase in complaints about civil rights violations since the policy took effect.
