Veteran: Immigration Crisis Overshadows VA Problems

McALLEN - A veteran says the immigration crisis impacting the Rio Grande Valley is overshadowing problems at the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Juan Garcia served two tours of duty during the Vietnam War. He is one of the countless veterans who continue struggling with the VA for medical care.

"I finally had it done this Tuesday, almost three months after my doctor wanted me to get an MRI," Garcia said.

Garcia wants to know why those who crossed into the United States illegally are getting treated faster than the people who fought for the country.

"They're taking up medical services, food, shelter ... transportation to go up to where they're going. We didn't get anything," Garcia said.

Garcia said it's heartbreaking to see what's happening along the border. Still, he said the current crisis is putting the VA issue on the back burner.

He said it's a never-ending battle for veterans.

"A lot of older veterans, and younger veterans, they just give up. What's the use?" Garcia

Garcia said the country's leaders shouldn't forget about those who fought to preserve freedom.
