Neb. bill takes on concerns over marriage licenses

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) _ A state senator wants to clear county clerks of liability in cases where an illegal immigrant provides false information to get a marriage license. County clerks would receive that protection under a bill (LB769) introduced Thursday by Sen. Arnie Stuthman of Platte Center. The Nebraska Association of County Officials helped write the legislation to address concerns raised last year when five counties were accused of discriminating against license applicants. The Nebraska chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union threatened to sue Hall, Lincoln, Dawson, Platte and Phelps counties after investigating reports the counties were illegally turning away Spanish speakers. In June, the ACLU said the allegations were resolved without need for litigation. ___
