CAUTION
Evodio Manilla-Cabrera, along with 3 accomplices who have since been found guilty, is being sought for smuggling aliens into the United States. Though the attempt failed, Manilla-Cabrera allegedly smuggled 26 Mexican citizens across the United States/Mexican border, which resulted in the deaths of many individuals. On May 23, 2001, United States Border Patrol Agents discovered 26 individuals in the desert approximately 80 miles south of Sentinel, Arizona. Of the 26 Mexican immigrants, 14 people were found deceased with their bodies badly burned by the sun and heat. The remaining individuals were provided with medical assistance for serious injuries. It was determined the group crossed into the United States in a van on May 19, 2001. After crossing the border, the group walked for approximately 2 to 3 days in the desert with minimal water. Allegedly, Manilla-Cabrera organized the above-mentioned smuggling attempt.

On August 16, 2001, Evodio Manilla-Cabrera was indicted federally in the United States District Court, District of Arizona, for conspiracy and inducing aliens to enter the United States, and a federal warrant was issued for his arrest.
