A registered sex offender wanted on felony charges in New York arrested after illegally crossing the U.S.-Mexico border into southeastern San Diego County was awaiting extradition Thursday.

Border Patrol agents spotted the 41-year-old man hiding in some brush in the Tecate community just north of the international boundary about 1 a.m. Wednesday, according to Payam Tanaomi, public information officer for U.S. Border Patrol.

A records check showed was a registered sex offender with a New York felony warrant for his arrest, Tanaomi said.

Agents took the man into custody, where he was awaiting transfer to the New York State Department of Corrections, Tanaomi said. His name was not immediately available.
