Washington man arrested while trying to smuggle almost 40 guns into Mexico

DEL RIO, Texas - A Washington man was arrested after officials found nearly 40 guns, ammunition and more hidden in his truck as he tried to cross the border into Mexico.
Miguel Diaz-Calderon, 51, of Union Gap, Washington, was arrested at the Eagle Pass International Bridge No. 2 Tuesday by U.S. Customs and Border Protection Officers.

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, the officers searched his truck and found the following.

  • 27 Handguns
  • 12 Rifles
  • More than 10,000 rounds of ammunition
  • 70 gun magazines
  • An assortment of other gun parts


Diaz-Calderon, who is now facing a charge of attempting to smuggle firearms into Mexico, was also found with $5,000 in cash.

He allegedly told investigating officials he was supposed to be paid another $5,000 when he delivered the items.

The DOJ said Diaz-Calderon now faces up to 10 years in federal prison if he is convicted.

He's still in custody, as of Wednesday.
