Worker for Border Patrol Unscathed after Shooting Incident

Campo, Calif. — Yesterday morning in Campo, Calif., gunshots were fired across the border by an unknown assailant in Mexico, nearly striking a worker contracted by the U.S. Border Patrol.

The worker heard the gunshots at about 9 a.m. while performing maintenance duties along the border. A shot shattered the rear driver-side window of the unmarked utility vehicle the worker was driving. The worker did not sustain any injuries from the shooting.

Later, a lead projectile was discovered lodged in the backseat of the utility vehicle and it was determined the shot originated from Mexico.

Border Patrol agents notified Mexican authorities about the shooting. The authorities conducted a search along the border in Mexico, but they were unable to locate a suspect.

The Border Patrol in San Diego sector partners with other law enforcement agencies on both sides of the border to combat and stop border violence and will continue to do so in order to effectively mitigate the threat to our personnel as well as border communities.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection is the unified border agency within the Department of Homeland Security charged with the management, control and protection of our nation's borders at and between the official ports of entry. CBP is charged with keeping terrorists and terrorist weapons out of the country while enforcing hundreds of U.S. laws.
