Teen charged with sexually assaulting 8-year-old cousin

    Associated Press - August 31, 2007 3:45 PM ET

SHEBOYGAN, Wis. (AP) - More details are released in the case of a 17-year-old boy who was charged today with sexually assaulting his 8-year-old cousin.

A criminal complaint from the Sheboygan County District Attorney's office says a friend of the family found Martin L. Gamez with the girl after leaving them home alone earlier this month.

Gamez is charged with felony first-degree sexual assault of a child and misdemeanor causing a child to expose his or her genitals.

The complaint says the friend who found Gamez punched and kicked him and they even struggled over a knife.

According to another complaint, the girl's mother stabbed the teen when she'd found out what happened. She's been charged with misdemeanor battery.

Gamez is being held on $50,000 cash bond. The prosecutor's office says immigration authorities are looking into whether he is in the country illegally.

An 18-year-old illegal immigrant convicted of two sexual assaults was sentenced this morning to eight years in prison.

Martin L. Gamez, a Mexican citizen who had been living at 1212 Erie Ave., sexually assaulted an 8-year-old girl last year and forced a teenage girl to perform a sex act on him the year before, court records show.

The resulting charges carried penalties of up to 65 years in prison, and Sheboygan County District Attorney Joe DeCecco recommended eight years behind bars. Defense Attorney George Limbeck recommended a four-year sentence.
