Woman pleads guilty in Social Security fraud case
April 21, 2011 - 5:09 PM
SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — A longtime employee of the Social Security Administration office in San Jose faces up to five years in prison after pleading guilty to creating and selling fake Social Security cards.
The U.S. Attorney's Office says 66-year-old Rachel Ochoa entered the plea to one count of unlawful production of an identification document on Monday as part of an agreement with prosecutors. She was facing an additional charge of theft of government property.
Ochoa — a 29-year employee of the administration — was accused of selling fake cards to more than 25 people from 2005 until her arrest on Nov 9. Authorities say the recipients were illegal immigrants who paid $2,500 to $5,000 each for the cards.
Ochoa also allegedly faked documents to support applications for the cards.
She is scheduled to be sentenced on July 18.
