A Lubbock County grand jury indicted Tuesday a 44-year-old man accused of sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl in July.

Luis Romero faces a first-degree felony count of aggravated sexual assault of a child, which carries a punishment of five to 99 years or life in prison.

Lubbock police believe Romero sexually assaulted the girl who was asleep July 5.

Officials said the girl told her older sister about the assault and police were called. While police were at the scene, Romero returned and was arrested.

Investigators found blood on the mattress where the girl was sleeping.

Romero, who is an undocumented immigrant, was indicted Aug. 9 on two charges of burglary of a habitation and one charge of attempted burglary of a habitation.

Romero allegedly broke into three different residences on three different dates in late June and early July.

He is being held at the Lubbock County Detention Center. His bond for the sexual assault charge is set at $250,000. His bonds for the burglary charges are set at $50,000 each, jail records show.
