Young Somali men missing from Minneapolis

Young Somali men missing from Minneapolis

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Young Somali men in Minneapolis have gone missing in recent months, and some members of the Somali community fear the youths are being recruited to return to their homeland to fight with terrorist groups.

One of the men who disappeared from Minneapolis is believed to have killed himself in an Oct. 29 suicide bombing in northern Somalia, according to a U.S. law enforcement official who spoke on condition of anonymity because the official was not authorized to speak publicly about the case. That official confirmed that the FBI and Justice Department were investigating.

Another U.S. law enforcement official, also speaking on condition of anonymity, said authorities are calling it one of the first instances in which a U.S. citizen has acted as a suicide bomber.

The Oct. 29 bombings included a series of five seemingly coordinated attacks in the breakaway republic of Somaliland and in Somalia's Puntland region. More than 20 people were killed.

"We're aware of the circumstances in Somalia right now and the events of the Oct. 29 bombings. And we are aware that a number of individuals from throughout the U.S. and Minneapolis have traveled to Somalia to potentially fight for terrorist groups," said Special Agent E.K. Wilson, an FBI spokesman in Minneapolis. He did not confirm or deny whether there was an ongoing investigation.

Members of the Somali community in Minneapolis said small groups of young men have been disappearing from Minnesota over the last year. Anywhere from 15 to 20 have left Minneapolis in recent months, said Omar Jamal, executive director of the Somali Justice Advocacy Center.

"We know for a fact this is happening, but we don't know who is doing it," he said.

Osman Ahmed, a Somali activist in Minneapolis, said his 17-year-old nephew is among a group of at least seven people who went missing Nov. 4.

The Associated Press is honoring Ahmed's request to withhold the name of the teen for the youth's safety. Ahmed said the teen came to the U.S. as a young child and was an American citizen, like the others who left that day.

Ahmed said his nephew was a high school senior and had a normal routine of going to school, going home then going to the mosque.

"He was a very nice guy," Ahmed said. "He was very clever. Very shy. Very cool."

On Nov. 4, he told his mother that a friend would pick him up from school, but he never came home.

"We started checking hospitals, we went to the police station," Ahmed said.

The family then realized that the teen's U.S. passport was missing, and Ahmed said authorities found a flight itinerary showing the teen arriving in Nairobi, Kenya, on Nov. 5.

Within two days, the teen called his mother, saying only that he was alive, safe and in Mogadishu, Somalia, Ahmed said. The teen gave no other details and has not been heard from since.

"We are praying to see him one day," Ahmed said.

Ahmed, who has been talking with other relatives of missing young men, said the families received similar phone calls.

Some members of the Somali community in Minneapolis are concerned that the young men are being recruited to go to Somalia and fight. The impoverished nation on the Horn of Africa is caught up in an Islamic insurgency and has not had a functioning government since 1991.

"It has to come to an end right now," said Jamal. "It has to stop. ... We have so many families grieving. We don't want any more kids to get brainwashed and programmed."

Jamal and Ahmed said it is suspicious because someone is providing money and transportation for the men to fly from Minnesota to Africa.

"My nephew, he doesn't have money for a ticket," said Ahmed. "None of these kids do."

Jamal said he hopes the situation isn't a black eye for the state's Somali community, which the U.S. Census numbered at more than 24,000 in 2006. Local activists claim the actual number is higher than that.

"We hope that this won't be an issue where the community will be looked at differently," Jamal said. "Somalis at large are very peaceful people. ... We don't want the Somali community to be looked at as a group of suicide bombers."

FEDS: Twin Cities man behind Somalia bombing

5 EYEWITNESS NEWS has learned that federal law enforcement sources believe that a Twin Cities man blew himself up in a suicide bombing in Northern Somalia last month.

The FBI and Homeland Security are investigating whether Shirwa Ahmed had developed a terrorist recruiting network in the area.

5 EYEWITNESS NEWS learned that Ahmed came to the Twin Cities in 1996 and graduated from Roosevelt High School in Minneapolis. He was a naturalized U.S. citizen.

More than a dozen young men of Somali descent, mostly in their 20s, from the Minneapolis area have recently disappeared, U.S. law enforcement officials tell 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS. All are thought to be associates of Ahmed. U.S. officials suspect most of the young men have departed for Somalia to fight in ongoing violence there or to train in terrorist camps. Family members of the young men are said to be distraught, trying to figure to out what happened to them, sources say.

So far, the investigation has not uncovered credible evidence of a plot targeting the U.S. but American officials want to track down all these young men before they can say for certain what this is or is not, according to ABC News. Sources say the situation is being closely monitored by senior law enforcement and intelligence officials in Washington.

CIA Director Michael Hayden recently voiced his concern about increased fighting in Somalia and the Horn of Africa and the desire of Al Qaeda to strengthen it's ties in Somalia.

"In East Africa, Al Qaeda's engaging Somali extremists to revitalize operations," said Hayden. "And while there clearly has not yet been an official merger, the leader of the al-Shabaab terrorist group is closely tied to al-Qa’ida. And the recent bombings in Somalia may have meant, at least in part, to strengthen the bona fides of this group with al-Qaeda's senior leaders. A merger between al-Shabaab and al-Qa’ida could give Somali extremists much needed funding while al-Qaeda could then claim to be re-establishing its operations based in East Africa. That's a base that was severely disrupted about two years ago when Ethiopia moved into Somalia."

Exclusive: Did Immigration Fraud Have a Hand in Creation of Alleged Minnesota Terror Group?

    Michael Cutler

A recent ABC report should be of concern to all Americans and to our elected leaders. It regards Shirwa Ahmed, a naturalized U.S. citizen who is believed to have committed a suicide bombing in Somalia and – even more disturbing – may have been involved in the recruitment of young men of Somali descent here in the United States.

The news report further states that more than a dozen such men, perhaps as many as 40 and mostly in their 20s, have "disappeared."

Here are the most important questions:

How did Shirwa Ahmed acquire citizenship through the naturalization process? Did he come here as a young child and naturalize through his parents or did he recently acquire United States citizenship by committing immigration fraud? How many more people are now operating in our country or seeking to enter our country in support of terrorist objectives?

There have been a number of GAO (General Accountability Office) reports pointing to nonfeasance, misfeasance and malfeasance at USCIS (United States Citizenship and Immigration Services) where, to cite one example, in a report issued two years ago, USCIS allegedly claimed to have lost 111,000 immigration files of aliens who applied for a variety of immigration benefits – including some 30,000 such files relating to applications for naturalization. Incredibly, according to the GAO, the applications for those benefits, including those applications for naturalization were processed without the relevant and critically important files!

Immigration fraud has been an important component of the strategies employed by terrorists operating our country for many years. This includes the terrorists who attacked our nation in 1993 when Amir Kansi, a Pakistani national who had committed fraud when filing for political asylum, stood outside CIA headquarters in Langley, Virginia in January of that year and shot five CIA employees who were reporting for work with an AK-47. Two of those employees died and the three others were wounded. On February 26, 1993, when the first attack was carried out at the World Trade Center complex, immigration fraud was again a significant factor.

Today, once again, we are being informed about a naturalized citizen who may well have used his position as a citizen of our country against our nation and against our citizens.

We need to know if the young men who are described as having gone missing may have gamed the immigration bureaucracy in order to enter our country and/or embed themselves in our country.

This is not about creating xenophobia as the open border advocates often accuse those of us who have fact-based concerns. This is about making certain that an important component of national security lives up to its obligation to honor those aliens whose presence in our country contributes to the magnificent tapestry that makes up our country by keeping out those whose intentions are not benign but are rather seeking our destruction.

A 2005 report prepared by Janice Kephart, former counsel to the 9/11 Commission, for a panel discussion by the Center for Immigration Studies (with which I am associated), brought to light many disturbing revelations, including:
    · Of the 94 foreign-born terrorists who operated in the United States, the study found that about two-thirds (59) committed immigration fraud prior to or in conjunction with taking part in terrorist activity.
    · Of the 59 terrorists who violated the law, many committed multiple immigration violations – 79 instances in all.
    · In 47 instances, immigration benefits sought or acquired prior to 9/11 enabled the terrorists to stay in the United States after 9/11 and continue their terrorist activities. In at least two instances, terrorists were still able to acquire immigration benefits after 9/11.
    · Temporary visas were a common means of entering; 18 terrorists had student visas and another four had applications approved to study in the United States. At least 17 terrorists used a visitor visa -- either tourist (B2) or business (B1).
    · There were 11 instances of passport fraud and 10 instances of visa fraud; in total 34 individuals were charged with making false statements to an immigration official.
    · In at least 13 instances, terrorists overstayed their temporary visas.
    · In 17 instances, terrorists claimed to lack proper travel documents and applied for asylum, often at a port of entry.
    · Fraud was used not only to gain entry into the United States, but also to remain, or "embed," in the country.
    · Seven terrorists were indicted for acquiring or using various forms of fake identification, including driver's licenses, birth certificates, Social Security cards, and immigration arrival records.
    · Once in the United States, 16 of 23 terrorists became legal permanent residents, often by marrying an American. There were at least nine sham marriages.
    · In total, 20 of 21 foreign terrorists became naturalized U.S. citizens".
I would ask that you remember that our nation's leaders are apparently gearing up once again to foist an amnesty program on our nation and our citizens. That amnesty program would be administered by the inept and incompetent USCIS.

This commentary was written with the aim to alert you to the challenges confronting our nation. Now it is up to you, the citizens of this nation, to contact your elected representatives and demand that they represent you and your family and to protect our nation. This is the burden all Americans must bear.

Many years ago there was a clever campaign mounted by the American Red Cross. They hung signs in buses and subway cars in New York City that were aimed at those New Yorkers who would fail to donate blood by saying, "Remember, to the other guy, you are the other guy!â€

.....what is wrong with the nation.....? We need someone in power with some courage to shut the door down temporarily to visas from nationals from countries that harbor/train/finance/hide/assist Islamic terrorists....there should be an immediate moratorium on visas issued to persons from Somalia, Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Syria, etc. ......don't let them in for any reason for at least another 10 years. End of story.
