Zambian judge wants detained illegal immigrants repatriated
A high court judge in Zambia has urged the country's Imm igration department to consider repatriating immigrants detained in the Eastern Province as a way of decongesting prisons in the area.
Judge Eddie Sikazwe said prisons in the region could only be decongested if some of the inmates, such as illegal immigrants, were repatriated.
"You should ensure that you contact immigration department to deport illegal imm igrants to decongest prisons in the province," Sikazwe was quoted by the local media Wednesday as telling the Zambian Prisons Service regional deputy commanding o fficer Sebastian Lungwangwa.
Zambia's eastern province, which borders Malawi, has 1,148 inmates in five prisons in the district towns of Chipata, Katete, Lundazi, Petauke and Nyimba.
