Brenda Arenas would have been a sophomore at Sunnyside High School in Tucson, Ariz. in the fall of 2009.

Excited about her upcoming Quinceañera –- the traditional coming-of-age ceremony for girls –- she had her dress ready and her invitations sent out.

But Brenda wouldn’t get the opportunity to wear that dress to her Quinceañera. Instead, the once bright-eyed teen with a zest for life would be buried in it.

Instead of surrounding Brenda on the dance floor to celebrate her passage to womanhood, friends and family were gathered around her casket.

And just a block away from the home that played host to Brenda’s funeral, detectives at the Tucson Police Department are desperately trying to find the men who they say deprived the young girl of the bright future that lay before her.

Police say three men -– Juan Carlos Leon and brothers Christian and Orel Vasquez –- shot Brenda in the head during a botched carjacking on August 5, 2009, leaving the teen to die in her mother’s arms.

They say Brenda’s 3-year-old sister watched from the backseat as the horrific crime unfolded.

Now, cops need the public’s help to hunt down Brenda’s alleged killers, who they say hit the road the very next day.

They say Brenda's mother frantically drove to the nearest gas station for help, but her beautiful daughter wouldn't survive the gunshot wound.

Authorities say the crime began just minutes before Brenda Arenas was ruthlessly gunned down with a home invasion only a few blocks away.

They say six men -– including the Vasquez brothers and Leon –- stormed a Tucson house, demanding money and drugs.

Cops say when the men realized they had the wrong home, they attempted to carjack a passing car in the 6100 block of South Southland Boulevard.

Police say the Hispanic men armed with guns and dressed in dark clothing ambushed a car driving by. They say the car was driven by Brenda’s mother, with the teen and her baby sister inside.

Cops believe Orel Vasquez knocked on the passenger-side window with his gun, and the weapon went off, hitting young Brenda at point-blank range.

They say Brenda’s mother frantically drove to the nearest gas station for help, but her beautiful daughter wouldn’t survive the gunshot wound.

Authorities say that while the gunmen tried to hijack the family’s car, they fled in a gray 2000 Dodge Durango.

They say they located the vehicle the following day at an apartment complex in the 300 block of West Valencia Road, but the suspects fled before they could arrest them.

Cops: Abusive Immigrant Flees American Authorities


In 1997, officers with the Suffern, N.Y. Police Department arrested Carlos Andres Lopez-Marquez for sexual abuse on a child. Despite being an illegal citizen in the United States, Lopez-Marquez bonded out before authorities learned of his immigration status.

After his run-in with the Suffern PD, Lopez-Marquez headed north to Hartford, Conn. where he settled down with a woman. Things seemed to be going smoothly for Lopez-Marquez, who remained in hiding until he started to hit the bottle -- and as a result, started to hit those close to him as well, police have told AMW.

Cops say the abusive behavior quickly escalated, as did Lopez-Marquez's drinking problem. Police say he would grab his girlfriend by the arms and throat and throw her to the ground in drunken fits of rage.

Lopez-Marquez's partner couldn't deal with the abuse anymore and informed police of his wrongdoings. As if the situation wasn't bad enough, police allege that Lopez-Marquez had abused -- both physically and sexually -- her child as well.

Police in Hartford went to apprehend Lopez-Marquez, but before they could make the arrest, he had learned of the charges against him and vanished.

Now this low-life is on the run, and police are hoping your tips might generate some new leads.

Lopez-Marquez, who is originally from Mexico, still has family in Oaxaca, Mexico, and might be headed there to take refuge from American authorities.
