I would love to see about 20,000 of these people on the border.

Until a physical fence is completed, there should be a human military 'fence' across our southern border. I would suggest they be issued 'stop stakes' like police forces use, to flatten the tires of vehicles trying to cross the border.

Which brings up another point---have read the fence is suppose to with-stand the impact of a 10,000 pound vehicle going 40 mph. Any vehicle with 4 flat tires isn't going to go very far especially in off-road terrain. Are 'stop stakes' in conjuction with a border fence reasonable?

Is it true that when the national guard was deployed to aid the border patrol they were unarmed and unable to defend themselves if attacked--they were only to function as eyes and ears for the border patrol?

MyAmerica - Essentially, that is correct. Their existence in being deployed to the border was solely justified or rationalized along the lines of:
'logistical support' and 'on an interim basis' (my words, not official ones). To give the CBP time to beef up staff and training and deploy greater technical means. I know, I know....

    Thank you PhredE.
So the administration placed our troops in 'harms way' rather than possibly "offend the Mexican government" whose army is armed whether near the border or not.

A friend of mine spoke to a soldier deployed both to Iraq and border duty. He said he felt more unsafe and frightened on Mexican border deployment than he did in Iraq.

It's even more ridiculous than that. Despite being unarmed and given orders to take no offensive or arrest actions, they were given orders to withdraw (run away) if confronted or having seen any armed intruders. And, they had to more than once in the presence of armed drug runners.

Geez - it might make sense BUT the ill will (especially on the southern border) might mis-read it and go to the UN or WTO because they feel they're being "picked on".

Isn't it amazing that Calderon won't accept U.S. aid if we attach strings to it BUT he will "kick us in the rear-end" when it comes to our declaration of sovereignty?
