A car burns near an apartment building in Strasbourg as residents look out of their windows Monday. More than 4,700 cars have been torched since rioting began Oct. 27.

Suburbs of Paris had their ninth night of rioting, with nearly 900 vehicles damaged.

Residents in Aulnay-sous-Bois responded to the riots on Saturday with a silent march.

Many local people have been stunned by the scenes being played out in one of the world's richest cities.

The violence has spread beyond Paris - with incidents reported in the east, south and west of France.

Thirty-six policemen were injured across the country, including two who were shot while confronting a mob throwing stones at police in Gringny, near Paris.

The unrest escalated despite a pledge by President Jacques Chirac to restore order.

In Noisy-le Grand - yet another affected Paris suburb - a local gymnasium was burned down.

In several attacks across the country, gangs of youths rammed cars into offices and shops before setting them on fire.

The unrest has been spreading rapidly across the country, sparking fears that other European nations could be affected too.
