This is the letter I've sent to a few Republican representatives. My own representative is a Democrat, but since I'm a Republican, I decided I'd share with them my considerations.


Honorable Mr. Xxxxxx,

Please withdraw your support on House Bill 1183.

There are many key issues in regards to this bill which simply do not meet the requirements of good legislation. First among them is the fact this bill will immediately deny American and North Carolina citizens the rights and privileges being offered to these undocumented aliens. There are a finite number of college admissions available - period. Which CITIZEN will you deny admittance? Will you deny enrollment of your own child if he or she falls just short of the undocumented alien whose grades were just a little better? This is what this bill will expect of every single tax payer who will foot the bill to send these undocumented aliens to state funded universities.

This bill stipulates: If the person does not have lawful immigration status, then the person shall also file an affidavit with the constituent institution to which the person is enrolled stating that the person has filed an application to legalize his or her immigration status or will file an application as soon as he or she is eligible to do so. Simply put, this is the cart before the horse. These young men and women are soon to be adults and as such must be accountable for their own actions and decisions. The first decision they must face is the process of changing their immigration status. Signing an affidavit does NOT mean they will be accepted as a legal immigrant. What happens if they are denied that status? Again, which American or North Carolina citizen will not be admitted to the university?

This law makes no provision to ease the requirement of becoming a legal alien. Federal law determines who is allowed to enter the U.S. legally. I can speak from experience as a soldier who married a German citizen and went through the lengthy, expensive, and difficult process of bringing my wife to the United States. I will also tell you how insulting it is, having gone through that process, to consider my own children being denied the higher education this bill is offering to undocumented aliens.

Again, please withdraw your support of this bill and fight to keep it from becoming law.

The letter I am sending out is listed below. I'm sending it to all of the representatives on the three lists provided by ALIPAC and am 3/4 of the way through. The rest will be sent tonight or tomorrow morning. The first paragraph changes depending on whether the rep is opposed/supporting or hasn't made their position known yet.

I have read a great deal of opinion on this subject, both supporting and opposing, and I believe that thousands of legal resident students will be displaced in the limited number of college spots if this bill passes. My two children - one a high school student - were born and raised in North Carolina of legal citizens. Proponents of HB 1183 claim that it isn’t fair to illegal immigrant children because they didn’t choose to come here and it’s their parents who broke the immigration laws. Yet, no one on this side of the issue mentions the unfairness to children who are legal residents, including the ones whose parents came here legally through the lengthy immigration process and received their papers (instead of jumping line); many of them need this financial assistance too. After all, many children face financial hardships in our eroding economy. If they weren’t born poor, many are becoming so through their parent’s job losses or divorces.

HB 1183 is also unfair to out-of-state U.S. citizens who may choose North Carolina colleges. I’ve just read an article about Kansas that is one of several states that have passed bills recently to allow in-state tuition for illegal immigrants. The Federation for American Immigration Reform filed a lawsuit last July on behalf of 24 U.S. citizens in federal court in Topeka, claiming discrimination against American citizens.

The majority of the illegal immigrants in North Carolina and the U.S. come from Mexico. I’ve recently read articles, “Mexico’s Rich Don’t Like To Pay Taxes – They Think You Should,� by Brenda Walker and “Mexico Is To Blame For Illegal Immigration To The U.S.,� by Robert Klein Engler, among other commentary. Mexico is a very wealthy country, blessed with abundant natural resources and has the highest GDP in Latin America. Yet, they have a corrupt oligarchy of very rich elite, a small middle class and millions living in poverty. Mexico has the ability to - yet refuses to - take responsibility for the social needs of its poor citizens. Instead, they export their unemployed to the U.S. and receive back billions of dollars in remittances every year. U.S. citizens should not have their interests, economic welfare and environment jeopardized by their U.S. elected officials and business people for the benefit of corrupt leaders/rich elite of third world countries. U.S citizens are not responsible and our country is being destroyed. We already allow an extremely generous amount of �legal� immigrants to come here each year; let’s not be taken advantage of by parasitic countries whose leaders refuse to take responsibility, and encourage millions of their citizens to break our laws by entering our borders illegally.

I think thats a great letter and should get their attention if they have any concern at all for their fellow citizens.
