Curie council chief dumped
Had helped oust popular principal

More than three months after he helped dump "superstar'' Principal Jerryelyn Jones from Curie High School, Thomas Ramos has been dumped himself -- from two local school councils.
A hearing officer has ruled that Ramos committed ethics violations while president of the Curie LSC. The decision means Ramos cannot serve on any LSC, although he can run again in 2008.

Ramos, an employee of the city's Streets and Sanitation department, has 30 days to appeal. He had been serving as a parent member of LSCs at Curie and Columbia Explorers Academy.

In a May 15 decision released Tuesday, hearing officer Respicio Vasquez wrote that he believed three witnesses who said they were told Ramos improperly demanded and received a cash commission from Sabina Paredes. The alleged commission came after the Curie LSC, including Ramos, voted to give Paredes a contract to teach computer skills to parents for $175 a lesson.

Jones testified that she reported Ramos' alleged irregularities involving Paredes.

Ramos' attorney, James Tunick, called the hearing a "joke'' because Paredes never testified. Tunick expected there would be an appeal.
