A new poll by Arizona State University and KAET-TV Channel 8 shows Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio with a 59 percent approval rating, compared with 42 percent for Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon.
Still, Arpaio has a higher negative rating than Gordon. The sheriff got disapproval ratings from 36 percent of those polled, compared with 22 percent for the mayor.
Thirty-six percent of those polled said they either didn't know or chose not to grade Gordon's performance.
The ASU poll surveyed 577 registered voters between April 24 and 27.
Gordon and Arpaio have been battling over how to deal with illegal immigrants and migrant day laborers.
The mayor has criticized Arpaio's crime sweeps and raids on day labor sites saying they focus on Hispanics. Gordon is lobbying the business community to join that criticism.
Arpaio defends his actions, saying it is about enforcing the law. He faults Gordon and others who are not going after crimes related to illegal immigration.
The ASU poll also shows U.S. Sen. John McCain leading Democrats Hillary Clinton (53 percent to 37 percent) and Barack Obama (47 percent to 38 percent) in the Republican's home state.
Arizona voters gave President Bush a 34 percent approval rating and Gov. Janet Napolitano a robust 76 percent approval rating, according to the poll.
