The Chicago City Council voted 35-4 today to pay $2.25 million to the family of a 14-year-old home invader who died after he was shot in the back by an off-duty police officer in 2002.

Ald. Ed Burke (14th) said it would be better to pay the settlement to the family of Juan Salazar than risk going before a jury, which could decide that the city should pay even more.

The officer who shot Salazar stabbed his wife to death in 2005.

Four aldermen - Brian Doherty (41st), Eugene Schulter (47th), Mary Ann Smith (48th) and Bernard Stone (50th) opposed settling the case.

"I cannot see giving taxpayer money to the family of a home invader," Stone said.
