DENVER — Black History Month is February. Hispanic Heritage Month is Sept. 15 to Oct. 15. And at one Colorado barbecue joint, June 11 is White Appreciation Day.

Two Hispanic restaurant owners, Edgar Antillon and Miguel Jiminez, who recently bought Rubbin Buttz BBQ in Milliken, Colorado, have decided to offer a 10 percent discount that day to White customers.

“We have a whole month for Black History Month,” Mr. Antillon told 9News in Denver. “We have a whole month for Hispanic Heritage Month, so we thought the least we could do was offer one day to appreciate White Americans.”

It may have started out as a joke, but now there’s a sign taped on the restaurant’s window and posted on his Twitter feed announcing the event with the message, “Because all Americans should be celebrated!!”

Whether the owners can actually pull off the appreciation remains to be seen. Jennifer McPherson of the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies told 9News that the civil rights division would investigate if someone were to file a complaint.

Then again, Mr. Antillon isn’t afraid of a little controversy. A firearms instructor, he launched an initiative drive last year to allow legal marijuana users in Colorado to obtain concealed handgun permits. He also offers free concealed-carry classes at venues statewide through his organization, Guns for Everyone.

Before launching White Appreciation Day, Mr. Antillon asked for comments on his Facebook page about the idea. The reaction was mostly positive, although several people warned him against doing it.

“[D]on’t antagonize the people who’ll twist your point to make you look like something you’re not,” one commenter said.

    Mr. Antillon
agreed that “people will try to politicize the [expletive] out of it,” but insisted, “It’s simply a day to celebrate White Heritage, like I celebrate my Mexican Heritage on September 16th (Mexican Independence), and celebrate my American Heritage on July 4th.”

If nothing else, the plan is sure to generate significant publicity, which may be the restaurant owners’ end game.

“Free advertising on the NEWS,” said one commenter on his Facebook page. “I’d say Go For It!”

Hispanic-owned BBQ joint hit with bomb scare over ‘White Appreciation Day’

Owner: All customers to get discounts, not just whites

The Hispanic owners of Rubbin’ Buttz BBQ in Milliken, Colorado, had to shut down their restaurant on May 8, 2015 for several hours after receiving a bomb threat. The business planned to hold “White Appreciation Day” to highlight political double-standards. ... more >

By Valerie Richardson - The Washington Times - Saturday, May 9, 2015

DENVER—The Hispanic restaurant owners who ignited an uproar over their plans to hold White Appreciation Day next month were forced to evacuate their barbecue joint late Friday after a bomb scare.

Co-owner Edgar Antillon said Rubbin’ Buttz BBQ in Milliken, Colorado, was shut down for several hours during the dinner rush after a bomb threat in posts on social media, but he later said that the eatery plans to reopen Saturday.

Shortly before the evacuation, Mr. Antillon told the Washington Times that he has received numerous threats and criticism over the restaurant’s plan to hold White Appreciation Day on June 11. Mr. Antillon and Miguel Jiminez bought the restaurant last month.

    PHOTOS: What are the chances?

“It’s been phone calls, it’s been emails, it’s been on social media,” said Mr. Antillon. “Some are just, ‘Hey, you’re an idiot,’ and others have been legit threats. The former owners of this establishment are receiving threats even though they have nothing to do with this thing.

    It’s unfortunate.”

He announced Thursday on Twitter that white customers would receive 10 percent off their tab on White Appreciation Day, but he emphasized Friday that the discount would apply to all patrons, regardless of their race.

“It’s like we’ve said many times before, if a black person comes in here and says, ‘Hey, what about my discount,’ they’re going to get a discount,” Mr. Antillon said. “If a Mexican comes in here and says,

‘I want a discount,’ they’re going to get a discount. Nobody’s going to be turned down for anything.”

That may be enough to satisfy the Colorado Civil Rights Division, which investigates complaints of unequal treatment based on race, but it remains to be seen whether the clarification will rein in the restaurant’s detractors.

“You name it: It’s been Mexicans, it’s been white people. It’s been threats as small as, ‘We’re never coming back to your restaurant,’ to, ‘I hope I don’t see you on the street,’” Mr. Antillon said. “It’s been all levels from everybody.”

He said the idea behind White Appreciation Day is to “highlight a double standard,” citing the month-long celebrations for black history and Hispanic heritage, and remind patrons that, “We’re all Americans.”

“It wasn’t something that we took lightly and just jumped the gun.

We thought about it, we thought about the consequences, we thought about our families,” Mr. Antillon said. “And we still decided that, well, we could live in fear and not do anything, or try and make a statement, make a point that all this racial tension.”

On the plus side, he said the positive comments about the idea have outweighed the negative.

“The messages that we’re receiving are overwhelmingly positive,” Mr. Antillon said. “Here at the restaurant, there’s no change. People may laugh at it. I had two guys—a Mexican guy and a white guy—who came in all the way from Pueblo to eat our food.”

Mr. Jiminez hails from Mexico, as do Mr. Antillon’s parents, but that hasn’t inoculated them from charges of racism on social media. A list of negative Tweets compiled by the conservative website SooperMexican includes several comments along the lines of, “Every day is white appreciation day.”

“The restaurant owner who’s celebrating white appreciation day w/10% discount is Latino. Do whites cheering know that? Oh the irony,” said one Tweet.

SooperMexican responded, “Yes, actually, it’s widely reported, you idiot. I guess white people should be offended a Hispanic person would do that?”

After the bomb threat, Michael Lewin of Los Angeles told the restaurant owners on Facebook, “You brought this on yourselves, so own it. What you are doing is in poor taste and negates the struggle that millions of people have endured. It’s tasteless and shows a lack of understanding of history and a lack of empathy.”
Mr. Antillon said the toughest part about the hoopla has been his concern over the safety of his four children, who are home-schooled. Anyone itching to stir up trouble may want to bear in mind that he’s an NRA firearms instructor known for his organization Guns for Everyone, which offers free concealed-carry classes.
“Today was the first day in the entire time we’ve been here that I actually told my kids, ‘Don’t go outside, stay inside.’ It was very emotional for me,” Mr. Antillon said. “Today was just one of those days when I felt it wasn’t safe for them because of the threats.”
If he’s having second thoughts, however, he isn’t showing it. After regaining access to the restaurant Friday, he posted photos on Facebook of the rubbed prime rib he plans to serve Saturday on sandwiches, along with smoked filet mignon.
“Stay strong brother,” said Charley Barnes on the Rubbin’ Buttz BBQ page. “[T]housands are behind you and the more bomb threats you get the more we support you!”
Judging from the reaction, there could be a large crowd descending on the restaurant come June 11. Mr. Antillon said he has already discussed security concerns with local authorities in the town of about 6,000.
“I’ve talked to the police chief here to set up a plan just in case there are protesters, how we’re going to feed the protesters,” Mr. Antillon said. “I figure some barbecue will keep the peace a little bit.

Hispanic-owned restaurant retracts 'White Appreciation Day' plans after threats

Published May 11, 2015 Fox News Latino

    • SCREENSHOT FROM KUSA-TV

MILLIKEN, COLO. – A Hispanic-owned barbecue restaurant in northern Colorado has retracted to its plan to offer a "White Appreciation Day" discount after receiving widespread criticism and even a bomb threat.

Edgar Antillon, owner of Rubbin’ Buttz BBQ and Country Café in Milliken, Colorado hung a sign reading “White Appreciation Day!June 11th. Because all Americans should be celebrated!” last week – quickly gaining national attention on social media over the weekend with “White Appreciation Day” trending on Twitter.

On Sunday, he changed the description of the event, saying everyone was entitled to a 10 percent discount.

“We’re not backtracking, we’re not clarifying anything, this was the intention from the beginning,” he told KUSA-TV in Denver.

The changed plan comes just days after the restaurant received a bomb threat, which forced an evacuation.

Antillon, who was born to Mexican parents, defended his idea, pointing to Black History Month and Hispanic Heritage month as examples. He said he figured “the least we could do is offer one day to appreciate white Americans.”

“We need to end the white guilt because they’re included in this American history and they should be included just like everybody else,” he said.

Ricardo Romero, a civil rights activist in northern Colorado, called the plan "a perpetuation of racism."

Restaurant owner on 'White Appreciation Day' furor: 'Never will I regret it, never will I apologize'

    By Bill Vourvoulias
Published May 13, 2015 Fox News Latino

    • Edgar Antillon (Photo: Screen grab from KUSA-TV)

Edgar Antillon had no idea the sort of firestorm that the simple, handwritten signs he was posting on Saturday in his Milliken, Colorado, restaurant were about to unleash.

“White Appreciation Day! June 11,” they read. “Because all Americans should be celebrated!”

The plan was for Rubbin' Buttz BBQ and Country Café to honor white Americans by offering a 10 percent discount that day.

“It was our humorous way of poking fun at our society,” Antillon, the 30-year-old co-owner of the restaurant, told Fox News Latino. “It’s almost racist not to have a day to honor white people, who make up a large portion of American culture.”

But that’s not the way people took the gesture. The days that followed have been filled with bomb threats and death threats and Denver Police officers getting stationed at his home.

“I’ve had people tell me that they’re going to gut me,” Antillon said.

But that doesn’t mean that the married father of four has any regrets.

“None whatsoever,” he said emphatically. “Never will I regret it, never will I apologize.”

Nor will he cancel. White Appreciation Day will go ahead, he said. “People are too busy walking on eggshells all the time to ever accomplish anything.”

Asked if the anger was coming more from white people or minorities, Antillon said, “It’s all over the place, really.”

Two days after news of the event was aired on the local KUSA-TV station, it was reported that Antillon and his fellow-owner Miguel Jimenez, were changing the promotion to include people of all races—something Antillon insists had always been their intent.

The restaurant owner was born and raised in the Denver area to parents who immigrated from a small town in Chihuahua, Mexico. He started a 501(c)3 group called “Guns for Everyone,” which provides free classes in carrying concealed firearms, and bought Rubbin' Buttz BBQ earlier this year.

He admits that Jimenez, who was born in Guadalajara, Mexico, “is a little more concerned” about the controversy, as are other members of his own family.

Earlier this week, when calling Antillon’s home — which he shares with his wife, their four kids, and his mother-in-law — FNL spoke to the mother-in-law, Loretta, who was upset about police officers who were stationed at the house.

She also expressed deep misgivings about the controversy.

“I understand what they’re doing,” she told FNL about White Appreciation Day, “but I think they should have thought it out a bit better.”

For his part, Antillon is trying to focus on the good.

“I don’t get worried about negatives,” he said. “I’m almost glad this conversation has happened…. We have to overcome this ugliness.”

He added that there have been good things to come out of it as well.

“My entire family’s restaurant meal on Mother’s Day,” he said, “was paid for by someone else who told me, ‘I appreciate what you’re trying to do.’”
