MSNBC's Martin Bashir: Do pro-gun GOP senators need family member killed?

On Monday, MSNBC's Martin Bashir asked Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Md., if GOP senators need to have a family member killed to stop a filibuster on gun control, Newsbusters reported.

"But Congressman, is that what needs to happen to move these Senators to stop threatening a filibuster? Is that really what needs to happen? That you need to have a member of your family killed in order for you to do what the American people want you to do?" Bashir asked.

"I hope not," Cummings said. "I don't wish this pain on anybody."

"None of us does," Bashir added.

"Actually, Mr. Bashir, you just did," Newsbusters' Noel Sheppard wrote.

President Obama is bringing a group of Sandy Hook parents who lost children in the shooting to Washington in order to pressure Republicans on gun control.

According to The Blaze, the trip was organized by Sandy Hook Promise, a nonprofit started by community members in the wake of the shooting.

“The group is encouraging senators to come together around legislative proposals that will both save lives and respect the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding Americans,” the group said.

Fourteen senators, including Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., plan to filibuster gun control legislation that Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., is expected to bring up this week.

Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., told “Face the Nation" Sunday that he doesn't support the filibuster.

“I don’t understand it. The purpose of the United States Senate is to debate and to vote and to let the people know where we stand,” he said. “I would not only encourage it, I don’t understand it. What are we afraid of?”

The gun control debate has become quite contentious, thanks in part to talk show hosts like Bashir, who has compared the NRA to Hitler.

Others, like Texas Democratic Party Executive Committee member John Cobarruvius and Des Moines Register columnist Donald Kaul have gone so far as to call for the deaths of gun owners and those who support the NRA.

"The question is whether any of his superiors care about their on air personalities using such inflammatory rhetoric concerning America's elected officials," Sheppard wrote.

"They certainly wouldn't tolerate it - nor should they! - if anyone asked if a member of President Obama's family would have to be killed in order for him to do what the American people wanted him to do," he added.
