HOUSTON -- Three Houstonians have been charged in an international gun buying investigation.

Federal investigators said the trio duped Houston gun store owners into selling guns to people without criminal histories, and then those people handed the guns over to a criminal for cash.

The guns were shipped out of the state and then out of the country, detectives said.

Investigators said the guns were purchased over about a year and were of a variety of calibers.

Detectives said the head of the group was convicted felon William Edward Simmons. He spent eight years in prison for kidnapping, so he cannot legally own a gun.

Officials said Simmons had Austin Cody Cress and Marissa Shaborha Jones buy guns for him.

Court documents show that from November 2009 to August 2010, 15 handguns were bought from five different stores around Houston.

Investigators said the guns were shipped to New York, New Jersey and the Virgin Islands. The serial numbers on the guns were either scratched off or altered to make them harder to trace, officials said.

Detectives have not said who all the guns were going to.

Another man has been arrested in Puerto Rico, detectives said.
