Remember the 11-year old girl who got shot a few days ago during a slumber party? She was not the only one. This weekend was a very violent one for Chicago. Official reports (including the NBC affiliate in Chicago) say that at least 40 people were shot, and four lives were claimed in a weekend filled with aggressiveness.

Even after the death of Shamiya Adams was made public, The Chicago Police Department refused to release an official tally of the weekend’s aftermath. However, there were credible sources reporting gunfire and outbreaks around the city, which concluded a wave of summer violence. City officials had already condemned the outbreaks on the Fourth of July holiday (which claimed the life of 17 people and injured 53 – including 5 policemen) unacceptable. At that time, authorities claimed that shooting deaths in Chicago were down for the year.Sadly, violence continued to strike the city.

At least 18 people were shot in a single night, and the total number of victims shot since Friday hit 40. Four people, including the 11-year-old girl were killed. Let’s take a closer look at Sunday’s homicides:

  • The first one happened a little after 2.30 A.M. when a gunman opened fire in a bar. Police reports that the tragedy took place in the 4400 block of South Kedzie, in the Brighton Park neighborhood.
  • The first person to fall was a 24-year-old man who took a bullet to the chest. A 30-year-old man was also shot in the torso but he was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in stable condition.
  • In a drive-by shooting at a block party five people were fired at, and shot. One of them was injured fatally. A 43-year-old woman was shot in the leg and also suffered a graze wound to the head (she was taken to the West Suburban Medical Center). The cab driver took three bullets: one in the abdomen and two in the thighs. He was taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital.
  • Other shootings occurred along North Mayfield Avenue, North Laramie Avenue (a man suffered from gunshot wounds to the back – he was declared dead at the scene).

Besides these shootings there were at least 10 additional cases reported during Saturday and Sunday night. A 17-year old boy was shot while riding the bike around the 900 block of West 83d Street, while a 20-year-old boy was also shot while sitting in his vehicle in the 3600 block of South California Avenue. Two other people got shot at while at a gas station in the Portage Park. Around the same time, a 25-year-old man was shot near West Division Street (he “heard shots and felt pain” police reports).
The list ends with a 18-year old man who was shot near North Sawyer Avenue, two men and a 14-year old girl who were wounded near South Millard Avenue, and a 50-year-old woman who was attacked in the 4400 block of South Prairie Avenue. This week has been extremely bloody for Chicago. We hope the series of tragedies will end here. It is a miracle how some of the victims escaped with their lives.
