06-05-2019, 04:51 PM #49During WW2, the American airborne landings on D-Day in Normandy were the first American combat operations during Operation Overlord. Around 13,100 American paratroopers of the 82nd and the 101st Airborne Divisions made night parachute drops early on D-Day, followed by 3,937 glider troops. The mission of the divisions were to capture Cherbourg to provide the Allies with a port of supply, protect the amphibious landing at Utah Beach, and help merge the 2 American beachheads. Though the drops were scattered, but still all German units were defeated within a week. D-Day casualties for the airborne divisions were 1,240 for the 101st Airborne Division and 1,259 for the 82nd Airborne. On the image: Brigadier General Anthony C. McAuliffe, artillery commander of the 101st Airborne Division, gives his various glider pilots last minute instructions before the take-off on D minus 1.

06-05-2019, 04:53 PM #50Omaha Beach - which was actually a code name for one of the five landing points of the Allied invasion of German-occupied France on June 6, 1944 (D-Day) in WW2 - is also a key itinerary point of our hit Beyond Band of Brothers and other tours to Normandy. Omaha is basically a section of the coast of Normandy, facing the English Channel 5 miles long. The objective of the landings here was to link the British landings at Gold Beach to the east with the American landing at Utah Beach to the west, thus providing a continuous lodgement in the Bay of the Seine. Taking Omaha was primarily the responsibility of US Army troops, with sea transport, minesweeping, and a naval bombardment force. Very little went as planned - over 5,000 Americans were killed, wounded, or went missing -, but in a few days the original objectives were achieved. On the photo: seabees landing at Omaha Beach on D-Day.
