Miami-Dade Police Urge Residents ToArm Themselves After Possible Budget Cuts
Miami-Dade Police Urge Residents ToArm Themselves After Possible Budget Cuts
"If the mayor’s not going to provide security....get yourself some firearms because you’re going to have to protect yourselves"

John Rivera, president of the Miami-Dade Police Benevolent Association, has warned Florida residents to arm themselves because the police are not coming.
Speaking to WSVN News, Rivera said, “If the mayor’s not going to provide security, then my recommendation, as an experienced law enforcement officer for nearly 40 years, is either buy yourself an attack dog, put bars on your windows and doors and get yourself some firearms because you’re going to have to protect yourselves.”
The comments were made after Mayor Carlos Gimenez decided to cut $64 million from his 2014-2015 budget resulting in a possible loss of 600 police jobs to the county.
Miami-Dade is the largest local law enforcement department in the state, and one of the top ten in the country, serving 2.5 million people.
Guns.com reports, “Several specialized units including the Incident Management Team, Sport Unit, Tactical Narcotics Team, and one of the three Special Response Teams in the city would be disbanded. The department would be forced to shutter one of its nine stations, specifically the Midwest District Station, as well as closing the Corrections Department’s “Boot Camp” rehabilitation program for young inmates.”

Well, sounds like things aren’t super great in Miami right now. A set of proposed budget cuts would see hundreds of police officer laid off.
This obviously has residents concerned about the rule of law in the Florida city. One police spokesman has a suggestion – arm up.
According to WSVN [emphasis mine],
If police department cuts are made, officers from administrative posts would likely shift to the street and certain specialized units that deal with robberies and child abuse cases could see positions vanish. “One of the directions I told the director was that I wanted to have the same number of patrol officers in the street that we have today,” said Gimenez.First off, residents should already be taking precautions by taking responsibility for their own personal safety.
The Miami-Dade Police Benevolent Association fired back after the proposal, saying public safety is paramount and these proposed cuts will have a negative impact.
John Rivera, president of the Miami-Dade Police Benevolent Association, said, “If the mayor’s not going to provide security, then my recommendation, as an experienced law enforcement officer for nearly 40 years, is either buy yourself an attack dog, put bars on your windows and doors and get yourself some firearms because you’re going to have to protect yourselves. We won’t be able to.“
Second, this is probably just posturing for the police department in order to fight the budget cuts, but it’s completely true.

Proposed cuts in the local Miami-Dade County budget that could lead to the firing of hundreds of law enforcement officers have led one police association spokesman to issue a stark warning to local citizens: Better buy some guns. John Rivera, the president of the Miami-Dade Police Benevolent Association, bluntly told residents to “get yourself some firearms” after Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez announced his budget proposal for the upcoming year.
