WASHINGTON, Feb. 21 (UPI) -- Results of a CNN/Opinion Research Corp. poll indicate Americans are disillusioned with their government but are hopeful a turnaround can be achieved.

Of the 1,023 adults surveyed Feb. 12-Feb. 15, 86 percent viewed the current political landscape as "broken," CNN reported Sunday. Of that group, however, 81 percent said the current problems can be fixed while 5 percent said the government was irreparable.

The 86 percent who said the government is broken is an 8 percentage point increase compared to Americans asked the same question in 2006, CNN said.

CNN Polling Director Keating Holland attributed the increase to disillusionment among higher-income and rural residents.

"Maybe it's just a coincidence, but those are the groups that make up the bulk of the Tea Party activists today," Holland said.

The poll has an error margin of 3 percentage points.
