Australia upgrades cyclone to category 5
By MarketWatch
SYDNEY (MarketWatch) -- Cyclone Yasi has been upgraded to a severe category 5 cyclone as it nears the North Queensland coast of Australia, the Bureau of Meteorology said Wednesday. At 7:00 a.m. local time (3:00 p.m. Eastern), the cyclone was estimated to be 555 kilometers east of Cairns and 560 kilometers northeast of Townsville, moving west southwest at 30 kilometers per hour. The Bureau said that the impact from the cyclone is expected to be more life threatening than any cyclone in recent generations. Very destructive winds with gusts of up to 300 kilometers an hour, an extremely damaging sea-level rise and flooding are expected by Wednesday evening, the bureau added. The cyclone was rated category 3 on Tuesday.
