Barack Obama’s Shiny Objects Threaten Our Liberty.

“There is a pattern in politics where, when governments try to take the liberty of the citizens away, they try to distract them with shiny objects.” Ted Cruz

The Obama administration overwhelms us with a blitzkrieg of edicts, regulations, bad news, class warfare, race cards, scandals, propaganda and a multitude of “shiny objects.” This week, two major news stories soaked up our attention; the VA scandal and the freeing of five dangerous terrorists, in trade for Bowe Bergdahl.
Two developments have been lost in the news, this week. The first item is below the fold, on page A3, in Wednesday’s Wall Street Journal, titled; “Domestic Terrorism Task Force to Be Revived.” According to the article, Attorney General Eric Holder is devoting a larger effort to “stop violent attacks inside the U.S.” This was an opportune time for the Attorney General to release the notice of this initiative.
Mr. Holder isn’t talking about home-grown radical Islam, inner city gangs, or drug cartels. No. He’s focused on those “who may be motivated by a variety of other causes, from anti-government animus to racial prejudice.” Donald Sterling must be very afraid.
We’ve heard a lot about “code words” and “dog whistles,” since the beginning of the Obama administration. Democrats have effectively used those terms in their attempts to silence dissent. Over the past six years, we have learned that it is racist to make references to “Chicago,” “golf,” or “welfare.” It is clear who is being targeted. This task force will be used against Republicans, conservatives, Tea Party members and the NRA.
“Anti-government animus” doesn’t really mean anyone who has animus towards a generic federal government. It refers to anyone who disagrees with Barack Obama.
The second story which is buried in the news is “Senate Joint Resolution 19.” Senator Ted Cruz has raised the alarm over this resolution, warning these are “perilous, perilous times.” He added:
“Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) has announced the Senate Democrats are scheduling a vote on a constitutional amendment to give Congress the authority to regulate political speech, because elected officials have decided they don’t like it when the citizenry has the temerity to criticize what they’ve done.”
“And I’ll note this amendment, which has 41 Democratic senators as co-sponsors – 41 Democrats have signed on to repealing the First Amendment.”
“What it says is that politicians in Washington have unlimited constitutional authority to muzzle each and every one of you if you’re saying things the government finds inconvenient.”

On Monday, June 1st, Senator Cruz published an op-ed in the Wall Street Journal titled “The Democratic Assault on Free Speech.” The column concludes with:
“John Stuart Mill had it right: If you disagree with political speech, the best cure is more speech, not less. The First Amendment has served America well for 223 years. When Democrats tried something similar in 1997, Sen. Ted Kennedy was right to say: “In the entire history of the Constitution, we have never amended the Bill of Rights, and now is no time to start.”
On Tuesday, July 3rd, Senator Cruz filed two bills to protect the individual right to free speech in the wake of Democrats’ efforts to effectively repeal the First Amendment by allowing Congress to regulate spending on political speech.
The two bills Sen. Cruz filed are the “SuperPAC Elimination Act of 2014” and the “Free All Speech Act.”
According to the Senator’s web page:
“The SuperPAC Elimination Act of 2014 would eliminate the caps on direct contributions to candidates from individuals and also require all donations over $200 to be disclosed within 24 hours.”
“The Free All Speech Act would require that all restrictions on political speech that apply to individuals also apply to media corporations. Additionally, if legislation is unconstitutional as applied to media corporations, it shall carry no force as applied to individuals.”
It is extraordinary that we have reached a point that we must defend and argue for the First Amendment, but that is where we now find ourselves.
Each of these Obama initiatives, standing alone, is frightening in its promise of a Orwellian America. Their combination could snuff out the light of liberty.
We now live in a country in which the IRS, NSA, EPA and DOJ are weapons of an authoritarian regime, against American citizenry, unprecedented in our history, but mild in comparison to the fascist future we are barreling towards. We are moving towards an America in which congress can muzzle the speech of those with whom it disagrees and the Department of Justice, along with other government agencies can punish citizens for their “animus.”
Today, there are many shiny objects. We must be on guard so that we are not so blinded by their light we do not see the dangers before us. Be vigilant. Wear shades. Don’t let the shiny objects distract you.
