Big chunk of Greenland glacier breaks off

Big chunk of Greenland glacier breaks off

    11:36 AM 13

NASA-funded researchers monitoring Greenland's Jakobshavn Isbrae glacier report that a 7 square kilometer (2.7 square mile) section of the glacier broke up on July 6 and 7, as shown in the image above. The calving front – where the ice sheet meets the ocean – retreated nearly 1.5 kilometers (a mile) in one day and is now further inland than at any time previously observed. The chunk of lost ice is roughly one-eighth the size of Manhattan Island, New York.

Seven-square miles of a Greenland glacier broke up on July 6 and 7, moving the edge of the glacier a mile inland in one day, the furthest inland it has ever been observed. While such calving of glaciers isn't rare, seeing it happen at high resolution by satellite in almost real time is.

NASA-funded researchers have been monitoring Greenland's Jakobshavn Isbrae using satellite images from the Landsat, Terra, Aqua and DigitalGlobe's WorldView 2 satellites. The breakup was detected hours after it happened by Ian Howat of the Byrd Polar Research Center at Ohio State University and Paul Morin, director of the Antarctic Geospatial Information Center at the University of Minnesota.

"This event is unusual because it occurs on the heels of a warm winter that saw no sea ice form in the surrounding bay," Thomas Wagner, cryospheric program scientist at NASA Headquarters, said in a release. "While the exact relationship between these events is being determined, it lends credence to the theory that warming of the oceans is responsible for the ice loss observed throughout Greenland and Antarctica."

Jakobshavn Isbrae is located on the west coast of Greenland. It has retreated more than 27 miles since 1850, six of them in the last decade. Jakobshavn is also believed to be the single largest contributor to sea level rise in the northern hemisphere.

The only thing we are witnessing is the end of the last ice age where the ice sheet covered most of N. America. We know how far the ice was but don't know how far it retreats at the end of each cycle before it starts all over again. What causes the cycles is still a mystery but for sure it is not people...or cows.

The ocillation of the earth's axis, which can vary as much as 3 degrees is suspected of causing mood swings of all nations.

Passing through the galactic plain is gaining a lot of scientific interest. Supposedly we are about to do that again. If true...things should get interesting. I have seen hundreds of vids on this but these two make as much real sense to me as any.

To me the end of time is not near. It is the end of a segment of time and the beginning of the next. If it is possible that the ancients understood this shift and understood it radically changes earth then of course it could be the end for a lot of people and other life...but earth won't care about it...it will just go on being earth creating life as it goes along.

We are all astronauts on a ship called mother earth.

A 2.7 square mile piece of ice moving on land and going into the ocean should make a nice wave.

There were 150 glaciers in Glacier National Park in Montana, there are now 25

2 more glaciers gone from Glacier National Park

Ahhhh...science...now you're talking my language. Your opinion is extremely valid. Earth goes through changes all of the time. We either refuse change and die, or adapt and live. Civilizations rise and fall.

Also good video on the galactic plane. The 2012 crowd confuses this with syzygy, which is different.
Don't think about all the things you fear, just be glad you're here.
