    Dawn of the Dead

"Dawn of the Dead" from 1978, from director George A. Romero (Night of the Living Dead), is a landmark in zombie cinema, blending visceral thrills, tongue in cheek humor, and biting social commentary. The film stars David Emge as Stephen, Ken Foree as Peter, Scott H. Reiniger as Roger, and Gaylen Ross as Francine, portraying four survivors who barricade themselves inside a shopping mall during a zombie apocalypse. The supporting cast includes a horde of convincingly grim zombies, many of whom were played by local residents and volunteers. Produced on a modest budget of around $1.5 million, the film was shot primarily in the Monroeville Mall near Pittsburgh, and at the WQED public broadcasting studios. Unlike the black and white original from 1968, which this is a semi-sequel to, shooting this in color upped the whole premise quite effectively. Tom Savini, who also appears in a memorable supporting role as a marauding biker, provided groundbreaking practical effects and gore makeup that elevated the film’s shocking realism. The music that accompanies the movie is a mix of progressive and electronic rock full of tension and magic tribalism. Piercing guitars, synth orchestration and virtualism give life to thousands of blood thirsty zombies. Romero chose to release the film unrated in the U.S. to avoid the censorship of an X rating of the times, a bold move that only contributed to its cult status and influence on the genre. An influence which would become clear with similar films to come in the following decades.
