PEMBROKE PINES, Fla. -- Authorities have released a sketch of a man who they said shot and killed a U.S. Customs and Border Protection agent outside a Pembroke Pines post office Tuesday morning.

Donald Pettit, 52, was fatally wounded during an argument outside the South Florida Mail Processing Center, located near Dykes Road and Pines Boulevard, at 8:55 a.m.

According to police, Pettit and another got into an argument in the parking lot. That's when the gunman fired a shot, striking Pettit in the head.

Pettit was taken to Memorial Regional Hospital, where he later died. The gunman fled the scene.

A motive for the shooting was not immediately known, but police said Pettit was not armed.

"He did have his child in the car with him," Pembroke Pines police Deputy Chief Mike Segarra said, adding that it made the shooting more "sickening."

Pettit, who lived in Pembroke Pines with his wife and two children, served in the U.S. Army for 20 years and spent 15 years as an investigator with the Food and Drug Administration before joining U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

Police said the shooter is believed to be in his 50s or 60s, 6 feet 1 inch tall with white, slicked-back hair, saggy cheeks and a medium build. Police said he was driving a green or gray Chrysler 300.

A command post was established in the parking lot of the post office. Federal agents, state law enforcement, police officers and Broward Sheriff's Office deputies have joined in the search for the shooter and the vehicle.

"We're here to work together and we're going to find this guy," Segarra said.

There must be security cameras in the area.

Customs agent killed outside Pembroke Pines post office as daughter watches

By Macollvie Jean-François, Robert Nolin and Brian Haas | Sun-Sentinel.com
    5:51 PM EDT, August 5, 2008

PEMBROKE PINES - Hundreds of law enforcement officers using a Blackhawk helicopter fanned across South Florida today to hunt for the gunman accused of killing a customs agent in broad daylight during an argument in a post office parking lot.

Donald Pettit, 52, was with his daughter when he was shot about 8:55 a.m., said Carlos Baixauli, a spokesman for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

Pettit was taken to Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood in critical condition. Police spokesman Sgt. Bryan Davis announced Pettit's death at around noon.

Pettit was shot in the head after he and the gunman "got into some type of argument" outside the postal service's South Florida Processing and Distribution Center at Pines Boulevard and Dykes Road, Deputy Police Chief Mike Segarra said.

The agent's daughter was in his car and observed what happened, but she was unhurt, Segarra said. Officers responding to the shooting found Pettit laying next to his black Chrysler 300 sedan.

Pettit is a Pembroke Pines resident who is married and has two children, Segarra said.

Davis said police are looking for the suspect, who was described as between 50-60 years old, about 6 feet tall, with a full head of gray or white hair. He was wearing a short-sleeve, green plaid shirt.

The suspect was last seen driving east on Pines Boulevard in a late model gray-green Chrysler 300 four-door sedan with possible tinted windows.

Patsy Kelley, who said she was Pettit's ex-wife, said his sister called her this morning.

"She just said he got shot in the head," said Kelley, who is in Kentucky. "I'm shocked, I don't really know what to say. It is tragic. I feel bad."

Kelley said she and Pettit divorced 18 years ago, but she kept in regular contact with his family.

She said that Pettit's mother died around this time last year, making today's loss even harder for relatives to bear.

"This is really bad for the family," she said.

A security guard at the gate of the Encantada community where Pettit lived said only family were being permitted to enter.

About 200 federal, state and local law enforcement agents were expected to participate in a dragnet for the gunman, Davis said.

Officers canvassed businesses in the area, looking for any surveillance video tape that might show the shooting or the suspect.

A statewide alert also was issued.

About a hundred officers assembled at the U.S. Customs and Border Protection office near the post office, many of them in bullet-resistant vests. A Blackhawk helicopter from the federal Department of Homeland Security made several stops there to pick up officers.

"We're just going to saturate the area," Davis said. "We'll just start turning over every rock."

At Memorial Hospital, a steady trickle of officers walked through the emergency room where the agent was taken. None would comment.

The center is one of three mail distribution centers in South Florida. The others are in Fort Lauderdale and Miami.

Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to call Broward Crime Stoppers at at 954-493-TIPS, Pembroke Pines police, 954-431-2225, or online: www.browardcrimestoppers.org.

I was at the command center this evening and around the time of the last press conference. They have survellience film of the vehicle fleeing thanks to some people who seen it and came forward. There is also a $175,000 reward for this guy. I cannot give much more info at this time.

The law enforcement presence is incredible. You have the City of Pembroke Pines post, Broward County Sheriff's Office post, 2 Miami Dade Police posts, and then you have the feds. There is Border Patrol, ICE, Secret Service, FBI, ATF, and more. The ATF is actually taking the tips on this.

She typically doesn't comment when it shows her group or people in a bad light. When it is proven that illegal aliens do bad things, she never gives any acknowledgment to stuff like this.
Illegal aliens remain exempt from American laws, while they DEMAND American rights...

IA supporters never do respond, and if they do they make excuses and rationalize tending to blame the victims. Imagine the outcry if people held up pinatas of IA and beat the crap out of them, it would be labeled a hate crime instead of protesting against IA.
