President Barack Obama's adviser Van Jones has resigned amid controversy over past inflammatory statements, the White House said early Sunday.
Van Jones, an administration official specializing in environmentally friendly "green jobs," has been linked to efforts suggesting a government role in the Sept. 11 terror attacks and to derogatory comments about Republicans.
Jones issued an apology on Thursday. When asked the next day whether Obama still had confidence in him, White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said only that Jones "continues to work in the administration."
The matter surfaced after news reports of a derogatory comment Jones made in the past about Republicans, and separately, of Jones's name appearing on a petition connected to the events surrounding 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon.
That 2004 petition had asked for congressional hearings and other investigations into whether high-level government officers had allowed the attacks to occur.
Jones flatly said in his statement that he did not agree with the petition's stand and that "it certainly does not reflect my views, now or ever."
As for his other comments he made before joining Obama's team, Jones said: "If I have offended anyone with statements I made in the past, I apologize."

How long before we hear the usual cries that Jones was targeted and forced to resign ONLY because of.......drumroll please.......RACISM?!!
This is even funnier given that it was Van Jones' organization, ColorofChange, that demanded the boycott of Beck's show by advertisers such as Geico, etc. ColorofChange's website now claims Jones has been "inactive" in the organization for a while now. Wonder what the advertisers think now?<div>Number*U.S. military*in S.Korea to protect their border with N.Korea: 28,000. Strange, isn't it, that his resignation didn't come as the result of his being exposed as an anti-American, communist radical?
Clearly an indication that communists and others involved in subversive, treasonous activities and desiring the overthrow of this country, are not a cause for alarm for obama or congress.Join our efforts to Secure America's Borders and End Illegal Immigration by Joining ALIPAC's E-Mail Alerts network (CLICK HERE)

Van Jones says he is a victim of health care opponnents?? I don't quite see the logic of that. Now what about that science czar next...
White House adviser resigns amid 9/11 controversy
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Presidential adviser Van Jones is resigning after coming under fire for signing a controversial petition regarding the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.
Van Jones speaks during the National Clean Energy Summit in Las Vegas, Nevada, in August.

The White House issued a statement late Saturday saying that Jones was giving up his post at the Council on Environmental Quality, where he helped coordinate government agencies focused on delivering millions of green jobs to the ailing U.S. economy.
Jones, who denied agreeing with the petition and issued an apology last week, said he was a victim of health-care reform opponents.
"On the eve of historic fights for health care and clean energy, opponents of reform have mounted a vicious smear campaign against me," Jones said in the statement. "They are using lies and distortions to distract and divide."
"But I came here to fight for others, not for myself. I cannot in good conscience ask my colleagues to expend precious time and energy defending or explaining my past. We need all hands on deck, fighting for the future," Jones said.
The Jones controversy centers on a 2004 petition he signed on a Web site that said: "A call for immediate inquiry into evidence that suggests high-level government officials may have deliberately allowed the September 11 attacks to occur."
An administration source told CNN that Jones did not carefully review the language on the petition.
