Brown Berets to speak in Chicago

Carlos Montes, a co-founder and former Minister of Information for the Brown Berets will be in Chicago on Thursday November 20th to speak on the Aztlan Movement and immigration. Montes was at the National Chicano youth Liberation Conference in Denver, Colorado in 1968 where the Plan Espiritual de Aztlan was written.

Carlos Montes, along with David Sanchez and others founded the Brown Berets in Los Angeles and he was a major participant, along with teacher Sal Castro, in the historic High School Walkouts of March 1968 in East LA.

The Brown Berets recently undertook a re-mobolization campaign and have now established new units throughout Aztlan. Among the new units established are the Tri-State Alliance consisting of the Tejas, Nuevo Mejico and Colorado units. These units are united under the concept of "Carnalismo".

The Brown Berets have been laying low under the Bush Administration but are expected to be more active under the Hussein Obama presidency. The Brown Berets have had a close alliance with the Young Lords of Chicago since the 1960s.
