Social services and health/welfare programs are on the chopping block today as the Sacramento County Board of Supervisors continue the mid-year budget hearings.

Officials are proposing to cut $14 million from the county's $2 billion general fund budget, which would mean laying off 111 workers and cutting another 70 vacant positions.

On Tuesday, the board discussed possible public safety cuts.

The greatest cuts, however, will be to the Department of Health and Human Services and the Department of Human Assistance (welfare).

Officials from those departments are discussing the impacts of the cuts today.

Cuts include losing another 49 Child Protective Services workers, slashing funding for homeless programs, eliminating public health nurses and reducing all welfare payments.

The hearings started shortly after 10:30 a.m.
