Go figure! Look who’s practically atop the state-by-state home market list. According to CoreLogic, the five best states for price appreciation — excluding distressed sales – in year ended March were:

    1.Maine: Up 8.3 percent
2.California: Up 7.7 percent (up 6.2% with distressed included!)
    3.North Dakota: Up 6.4 percent
    4.Virginia: Up 4.9 percent
    5.Montana: Up 3.8 percent
Worst? Idaho (-9.0 percent); Nevada (-7.8 percent); Michigan (-6.2 percent), West Virginia (-5.3 percent) and Florida (-5.2 percent).

In the coming year ending February 2011, CoreLogic expects California home prices — ex-distressed — to rise 5.5%, third best in the nation (3.4% when distressed sales are factored in.)

Starting last year California has a tax rebate for first time home buyers. That's why prices have increases slightly.
