    Chechen Warlord Shamil Basayev Killed...

    MOSCOW (AP) -- Chechen warlord Shamil Basayev, the purported author of modern Russia's worst terrorist attacks, has been killed, the head of the Federal Security Service said Monday.

    FSB head Nikolai Patrushev told President Vladimir Putin that Basayev had been killed overnight in Ingushetia. Patrushev's meeting was Putin was shown on Russian state television.

    Basayev, 41, claimed responsibility for some of Russia's worst terror attacks, including the seizure of some 800 hostages in a Moscow theater in 2002, the 2004 school hostage taking in Beslan that killed 331, and the seizure of about 1,000 hostages at a hospital in Budyonnovsk that killed about 100...

    And yes, he was the prime orchestrator of the Beslan school massacres, as well as the hoste-taking at the Moscow theater, which was staging a performance of East-West, numerous subway bombings, the invasion of Dagestan, among numerous other atrocities.

    Khattab-as well as his successor, Abu El-Walid-Aslan Mashkadov-the former president of Ichkeria-as well as his successor, in addition to Yandarbiev, his predecessor in office, have all been killed by Russian special forces or intelligence units.

    Basayev was the last major Chechen rebel leader-and certainly the last one who was actually Chechen-to still be at large, if I'm not mistaken.
