Despite hiring boom, employers struggling to find qualified workers
LinkedIn editor says despite hiring boom, employers struggling to find qualified workers
In our continuing series, Work in Progress, we explore the future of jobs and the issues facing the American workforce.
More from the series:
- How will automation affect the retail industry?
- LinkedIn CEO Jeff Weiner on America's skill gap and efforts to close it
Hiring is up more than 17 percent nationwide compared to July 2016, but some managers say in addition to a skills gap in the workforce, they're also facing the unexpected challenge of finding employees who can pass a drug test.
LinkedIn editor-in-chief Dan Roth joined "CBS This Morning" to discuss how employers are dealing with these challenges.
"You're seeing a lot of industries who are seeing double-digit growth in hiring and they're especially in the kind of drill-and-build areas. Manufacturing, oil and gas is seeing double-digit growth, aerospace," Roth said.
Roth said these are areas that haven't seen growth in the past but employers are having trouble finding people who qualify for those jobs.
"We keep hearing employers telling us one of the top problems they're facing is that people are failing drug tests," Roth said. "And they're addicted to drugs that they're getting from their doctors."
Some employers have even adapted their hiring practices so they don't count out needed employees.
"We talked to a manufacturer in Ohio who said he now no longer makes people take drug tests. He just asks them to tell him what they're on," Roth said.
Roth said that being able to pass a drug test has become a "competitive asset" for job seekers.
"It's affecting the competitiveness of American companies," Roth said. "The economy is doing well. People can get jobs that they want to get. They're moving to go fill these jobs.
They realize there are skills jobs across the country and people are starting to now either build the skills they need or move where they can fill them, but employers are saying it's costing them more, they can't find the right people and they can't find people who can pass drug tests."

Companies have ways making sure they don't have 'qualified' workers.
When talking to a young woman who had just gotten a job in a chicken processing plant, she was concerned that she might not keep her job because most of the workers were illegal. She had lost her job at another poultry company, to illegals, and was driving 70 miles - one way to work at this job..
She said if this company laid you off, as companies often do, when there is a slow down or for maintenance, they would hire you back one time. After the second lay off, you would not be hired back, you would be considered 'ineligible' to work there.
That way, the company can declare they just can't find 'eligible' workers - since they have just created a whole lot of 'ineligible' workers.
It just might be true they find a lot on prescription drugs, and I do think it is a problem that needs checking out. Can you, though, refuse to hire someone because of legal medication? I realize it would depend on what the medication is and why it was being prescribed, etc.
Just thinking that might be a very good way to make a lot - a lot - of Americans ineligible to work - If it is a blanket 'ineligibility' to be on medication.

That just doesn't seem like it would be that hard to do.
It's not something they can cook up in the garage - or to my knowledge - not much if any, is being brought across the border.
So, shouldn't be too hard to trace.
