Cingular converts stores for growing Hispanic market
Atlanta Business Chronicle - 3:26 PM EDT Tuesday
Cingular Wireless is answering the call of the Hispanic market by converting 420 stores to cater to Hispanic consumers.

Beginning this week, the Atlanta-based company is converting signage and collateral to both English and Spanish, and bilingual sales representatives will be available. The more than 420 stores being converted nationwide to the new bilingual concept were selected according to Hispanic population density in the neighboring areas. They are located in more than 40 cities primarily in states with emerging Hispanic markets such as Georgia, North Carolina, Virginia and Oregon and in states that have high percentages of Hispanic population such as California, Texas, Illinois, New York and Florida.

Cingular claims to be the nation's largest voice and data wireless provider and the No. 1 provider to the Hispanic community.

"That's a position we intend to keep," said Dan Norman, vice president and general manager for Cingular's North Florida market, in a statement.

The bilingual store concept includes products and services, marketing and infrastructure. The strategy includes wireless content, infrastructure support, a Spanish-language Web site, advertising campaigns and sponsorships, special long-distance rates and payment options, and a special range of prepaid and postpaid plans for the Hispanic market.

Cingular Wireless serves 55.8 million customers. It was formed through a joint venture between Atlanta-based BellSouth Corp. (NYSE: BLS) and San Antonio, Texas-based AT&T Inc. (NYSE: T).
