GOP Challenges to Senate Health Bill Fail

The Senate on Wednesday was on a path to defeating the last-ditch efforts by the GOP to derail the sweeping health care overhaul bill as it moved up its final passage vote by one hour to 7 a.m. ET Thursday.

The Senate voted 60-39 to reject Sen. John Ensign's call to examine the constitutionality of a health care mandate central to the overhaul bill.

The Nevada Republican wanted to determine whether it was constitutional for the federal government to require Americans to purchase health insurance.

The vote was one of a series of seven votes wrapping up the health care debate. The Senate also rejected an amendment by Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, R-Texas, by a vote of 60-39.

Once the Senate measure is passed, it has to be merged with legislation passed by the House before a final bill could go to President Obama.

House liberals insisted Wednesday that certain provisions be included in the final bill, including a government-run insurance plan that was dropped in the Senate legislation as part of the concessions made to moderates to secure 60 votes.

"For Congress to achieve true health care reform we must have a meaningful conference process that integrates both bills into the best possible piece of legislation for the American people," California Reps. Lynn Woolsey and Barbara Lee said in a joint statement.

Well what did everyone expect? The democrats wont admit to trashing our Constitution. Now we know how hard we have to work to get their butts out of there! But it will be done!

But there were some ads which were run....in fact, not a half hour ago I just saw one on Hallmark.

I think the problem is that most people just tend to tune alot of advertising out.

So how much closer do we let the Redcoats get to Concord Bridge?

They are now adding the following language to portions of this bill:

it shall not be in order in the senate or the house of representatives to consider any bill, resolution, amendment, or conference report that would repeal or otherwise change this subsection.

THAT can not be constitutional!!!!!!!!!!!! I am afraid we are very close to a historic moment that will change the US, and the world, forever one way or another

We will overturn these unconstitutional decisions. It won't stand if it passes.

Maybe........but not necessarily in the way that you might be fearing Cayla.

The historical moment may very well be, not a lapse into dictatorship, but the moment this thugocracy tried it and went too far.

Have faith Cayla.....we could be witnessing the beginning of the end for the whole agenda and everyone involved in trying to implement it.

I disagree. I watched them on CSPAN and other news networks for days and have listened to their arguments for months on health care reform. My email inbox was full of GOP arguments against this government health care takeover for months and months. And there were TV ads against the bill although I don't recall who paid for them. I think they fought as hard as they could while facing an unchanging stonewall majority of dirty dealing "big government" socialist Dems in both houses. In addition, how can you have fairness with the biased monster of mainstream media anyway?

I want to thank all the Republicans for their tremendous efforts to defeat this "worst bill ever".
I am going to personally email them a thank you. If it hadn't been for them there would have been no opposition whatsoever.

What could be interesting is if the bill passes and Obama signs it but there are immediate lawsuits against it, how can there be any 2010 implementation of its mandates? Wouldn't if be frozen in time until it's truly cleared of any unconstitutional wrong doing? (I am just not clear on this.)
