I visited the filthiest and smelliest place I’ve ever seen, the massive Ghazipur trash mountain. A towering mountain of garbage rises on the edge of the city and the stench hits you long before you even get close.

Located in New Delhi, this landfill is one of the largest in the country, built up over decades of nonstop waste dumping. From a distance it almost looks like a natural hill, but as you get closer you realize it’s entirely made of compressed trash — layers upon layers of plastic, food waste, smoke, and decay. The smell is overwhelming and constant, a heavy mix of rot and chemicals that clings to the air and makes it difficult to stay for long. The site is alive in a strange way — fires smolder in places, birds circle above, and trucks keep arriving to unload more waste onto an already overflowing mountain.

Just beside this extreme environment is a chaotic fish market, which makes the experience even more surreal. Fresh fish being sold steps away from one of the most polluted and foul-smelling places in Delhi creates a shocking contrast. The ground is wet, crowded, and messy, with strong fish odors mixing into the already unbearable landfill smell. Vendors shout over the noise, people move quickly through narrow spaces, and everything feels raw, intense, and completely unfiltered.

This part of New Delhi shows a side of the city that most visitors never see — not the monuments or the polished streets, but the harsh reality of waste, survival, and daily life existing side by side. It’s one of the most extreme and eye-opening places I’ve ever filmed, both visually and emotionally overwhelming.
