Detroit Is Socialism’s Logical Conclusion

Detroit is the prototype of socialism that Obama wants to replicate all throughout the U.S. He was there recently campaigning before an audience of union workers at a truck manufacturing plant, arguing for wealth redistribution. He told them that if the Republicans didn’t come to an agreed upon solution to avoid the fiscal cliff, everyone’s taxes would go up, and it would be the Republicans fault. If we can just accept that the rich should pay more in taxes, he said in effect, we’d have economic growth. It’s a little ironic that he was trying to sell more socialism to a city like Detroit whose liberal policies have only helped destroy the city. As CNS News asserted, Detroit is socialism’s logical conclusion.

Here are some facts about Detroit taken from CNS News:

  • In 1950, Detroit was the fifth largest city with over 1.8 million people.
  • Since then, the population has plummeted to just over 706,000 people in 2011.
  • 560,000 are eligible to work (aged 16 and over).
  • Of the work-eligible residents, only 305,000 either work or are looking for work.
  • 257,000 don’t work and are not looking for work.
  • 224,000 Detroit residents do work.
  • Of those workers, 34,500 have government jobs.
  • The 190,000 workers that are left have private sector jobs.

So in a town that used to be a bastion of economic success, it is now straddled with debt, and only 26.9% of its residents work in the private sector. If you include the government workers, 31.7% have jobs. And because so many productive citizens have left the city, out of 363,000 housing units, over 99,000 are vacant.

CNS points out that a major contributing factor of unemployment is the break down of the family unit in Detroit:

“Very few of the people who are staying out of the labor force in Detroit are staying out because they are stay-at-home moms with working husbands. Of the 264,209 households in Detroit, only 24,275 — or 9.2 percent — are married couple families with children under 18. Another 78,438 households — or 29.7 percent of the total — are ‘families’ headed by women with no husband present. Of these, 43,742 have children under 18.
There were 12,103 babies born in Detroit in the 12 months prior to the Census Bureau survey, and 9,124 of them — or 75.4 percent — were born to unmarried women.”

34.5% of households in Detroit are on food stamps.

The violence is so bad there that police have had to post signs warning visitors to enter at their own risk. The flyer asserts that Detroit is America’s most violent city and has the highest homicide rate in the country.
While Detroit resembles a third world country war zone more and more, Obama likely looks at it as a resounding success and dreams that the rest of the country would soon follow.
