Arizona Department of Public Safety officers pulled over a tractor trailer truck for a violation and said they discovered more than 3,000 pounds of marijuana hidden between a load of tomatoes.

The truck was stopped in the northbound lanes of Interstate 19 near Nogales for an equipment violation, officers said.

A search revealed 3,379 pounds of bundled marijuana on pallets concealed between a load of tomatoes, DPS said.

The driver was taken into custody and the commercial vehicle was seized, officers said.

"This shows the lengths that drug smugglers will go to get their product through Arizona," said Roger Vanderpool, director of the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

"Southern Arizona remains a busy corridor for drug traffic but we're seeing a similar situation throughout the state," Vanderpool said.
Priority: Normal
