Fatal Hit-And-Run Suspect Arrested 16 Years Later

LOS ANGELES A man suspected in the 1992 hit-and-run deaths of a couple in San Pedro -- he allegedly fled to Mexico, then returned to the area under a fake name -- was behind bars Saturday, police said.

Christian Faustino Lopez Herrera was arrested at Santa Cruz and Gaffey streets about 9:30 a.m. Friday and booked on two counts of vehicular manslaughter, one count of felony hit-and-run, Los Angeles police said. He was denied bail pending arraignment.

On March 22, 1992, Frederick and Ezna Crescitelli were having dinner with friends, Eugene and Joan Pollack, at a restaurant near Pacific Avenue and Fourth Street in San Pedro.

As the couples left the restaurant and crossed the street, a red Chevrolet Camaro sped through the intersection, striking Crescitelli, who was 82 at the time, and his 78-year-old wife Ezna. Joan Pollack, 60, also was hit, police said.

Eugene Pollack, who was about 10 feet ahead of the rest of the group, was unscathed. Frederick Crescitelli died at the scene.

Ezna Crescitelli died roughly 21 hours later.

Joan Pollack suffered life-altering injuries and died from an unrelated illness in 1999, police said.

Police said Herrera fled to Mexico but, years later, returned to the San
Pedro area and got a job as a busboy under a fake name.

In March 2008, Detective Dennis Duran of the South Traffic Division took over the case. And a June 20 story in the Daily Breeze helped generate several tips that led detectives to Herrera.

This is what happens when we have a faux border between the US and third-world mexico; and an apathetic government who refuses to protect its citizens. Mexico's illegals come at will, commit their crimes and victimize Americans, only to flee back to the sanctuary of mexico.

They then simply return when they feel like it under a different name and start their criminal activities all over again!
