NEW YORK (AP) — New York City officials say new projections show a flood zone will cover a quarter of the city's land by the 2050s as rising seas and other effects of global warming take hold.
Two top aides to Mayor Michael Bloomberg discussed the findings Monday. Bloomberg is scheduled to present recommendations Tuesday for dealing with climate risks.
The projections by a panel of scientists say 800,000 New York City residents could be living in that flood zone. And 8 percent of the city's coastline could flood just from high tides.
Some of the new projections move up estimates made in 2009 from the end of this century to the middle.

Mayor Wants City To Build Storm Barriers, Dunes To Prevent Future Storm Damage

Mayor Michael Bloomberg is set to deliver a major address on Tuesday on how the city should prepare for the effects of climate change, and NY1 has learned his proposals will include removable storm barriers and construction of sand dunes on waterfront areas. | NY1 will air that speech live at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday.



Mayor Michael Bloomberg is set to deliver a major address on Tuesday on how the city should prepare for the effects of climate change, following months of preparation from a task force the mayor set up after Hurricane Sandy.While officially City Hall is waiting for Bloomberg himself to detail the kinds of projects that could keep the city dry in future storms, those involved in the planning have told NY1 that one component will be removable storm barriers.
NY1 has also learned Bloomberg is also expected to call for dunes along the Rockaway Peninsula in Queens and Staten Island's South Shore.
Today, top City Hall aides talked about the climate change that has already occurred and what New Yorkers can expect in the future, making these projects necessary.
"We're going to need to make investments as a city, significant investments, if we're going to make sure that we're going to be protected over the long term. This is something that we can address, but it's not going to be easy," said Deputy Mayor Cas Holloway.
The mayor is going to be speaking at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, and NY1 will air that speech live.
